Web standards killed the HTML star
Development is like a shark: keep moving, or die. (OK, that bit about sharks is a fallacy, but keep imagining it's true for now) (more: Jeff Croft)
Fix ASP.NET browser detection error in Internet Explorer 11
I'm not sure if this was the issue on a few sites where Silverlight wouldn't detect IE11 or not, but it looks like it's a worthwhile fix if you're still running old code on your servers. (more: InfoQ)
Math.js
Sure, you can write your own calculations, or use the built-in Math object. This library has a few niceties beyond that: a nice expression parser, and RPN-like function chaining. (more: Mathjs)
Vagrant: A quick, effortless way to create virtual machines for local web development
Avoid all those "works on my machine" battles between devs. Not a replacement for VMWare/Virtual PC/Virtual Box, but a manager for those tools, that makes it rather easy to fire up VMs. (more: Make Use Of)
2014 – What web developers will need to know
I do try to avoid putting in all those "end of year"/"start of year" posts, but here you go anyway. (more: Flippin' Awesome)

Seems like all the cool kids with loads of data (Mozilla, Wikimedia, Stack Overflow) are moving to Elastisearch for their data. Time to look into it. (more: Elastisearch)
Ogv.js: an Ogg Theora and Vorbis video decoder in JavaScript
OK, no new game/3D libraries this week. How about a JS library for the video and audio formats hardly anyone uses? (more: Badass JavaScript)

  • ASP.NET MVC: Show Busy Indicator on Form Submit using JQuery and Ajax - John Atten
As we all know, users are impatient. We also know that if we don't tell them our application is "doing something" they tend to do silly things like click the mouse repeatedly, seeking some sign that the requested action is indeed being performed. For this reason, it is a good idea to throw up some
